The Spider Life Cycle

Eggs

The spider life cycle begins with an egg. Many species seek out quiet, undisturbed areas such as wall corners or floor joists to lay their eggs. Depending on the type of spider, they may deposit them in silken nests or inside little holes or tunnels, known as retreats. Residents may find teardrop-shaped sacs, like those of the house spider, in sheds, cellars, and attics.

Spiderlings

Spiderlings are baby arachnids. They look like tiny versions of the adults at this point in the spider life cycle. Some use strands of silk to float on warm air currents, a process called ballooning, to leave their siblings after hatching. In the case of the grass spider, several hundred spiderlings emerge from their eggs and wander off to build funnel-shaped webs and start catching prey to eat.

Adults

Once they’ve molted five to ten times, spiderlings become adults. Most only live for about 12 months. However, a few species, including female wolf spiders, can survive for several years. This particular arachnid may cause problems for homeowners, as it often builds retreats between boards and beneath siding.
